Spring 2013 Class Review
Moments offered me a chance to explore areas of photographic interest that I would have otherwise left undiscovered. By providing an engaging space to thoroughly discuss other photographers’ work, past and present, whether in class or during our numerous excursions, I felt that I was able to gain new perspectives on my own style and focus. There were a few key reasons I decided to join this class versus others.
For one, I couldn’t commit to the hours offered by other classes from local entities like the International Center of Photography (ICP) or various camera clubs. Although these types of organizations have a wide variety of classes and numerous staff, I was only looking to take a single, idea-forming type course which Our Moments offered with no hassle. With other organizations, the registration process would have likely entailed creating a portfolio, getting it approved by faculty, then paying between $500 – $1000 for a few weeks of instruction. It would then come with perks that would be of no use to an amateur photographer like myself.
One of the main reasons I joined the class was to learn more about creating a body of work rather than a collection of single, unrelated images. I was very happy with the outcome.
My final project is a collection of bridges and bodies of water with a slight twist. Although, at first glance, the photos appear to be 2 scenes digitally transposed on top of each other, they’re actually single exposure images taken with a glass prism held in front of the lens. The idea formed out of numerous discussions during the class and I certainly would not have come up with it without the help of Our Moments.
This class should be sought out by anyone who is looking to expand into new areas of their photography without the hassles involved with other photography institutions and clubs around NYC. It was easily one of the best experiences I’ve had on my path to become a better photographer.
